Lionel Brockman Richie Jr. was born in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1949. He was raised on the campus of Tuskegee Institute, where his grandfather worked. He received a scholarship tennis and attended Tuskegee Institute where he earned a degree in economics.

In the mid-1960, Lionel was a member of a number of R & B groups. He joined the Jays in 1968 as a singer and saxophonist. The Jays since the name was too close to the O’Jays, they changed their name to The Commodores. Other original members were the Commodores, William King, Thomas McClary, Milan Williams, Ronald LaPread and Walter “Clyde” Orange.

The Commodores Motown Records, a support act to the Jackson Five, but they soon became a very popular soul groups of their own.

In the early 1980s, Lionel was penning songs for other artists, including Kenny Rogers, Lionel composition “Lady” for the number-one singles in the Billboard took. He was also recording solo in the eighties and has officially left the Commodores in 1983. He was replaced by Skyler Jett as lead singer.

In 1985 he teamed up with Michael Jackson to write and record “We Are The World” together after the U.S. Africa.

The Commodores

Third Night Shift – 1985 – The only Top 10 single with no Lionel Richie, the song a tribute to singer Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson. A new version was recorded in 2010, belong to Michael Jackson.

4th Oh No – 1981 – The new single from Lionel Richie to the lines came out of her “In The Pocket” album.

5th Easy – 1977 – This song has been covered by artists such as Clarence Carter, Richie Havens, Taylor Hicks and Faith No More.

6th Sail On – 1979 – The only other Top 10 single of “Midnight Magic” album.

7th Sweet Love – 1976 – Their first single went Top 10 at No. 5 in the charts for the week.

8th Brick House – 1977 – The lyrics were by the members and the wife of trumpeter William King, Shirley wrote and provides the drummer Walter “Clyde” Orange vocals.

9th Just to be close to you – 1976 – For their “Hot On The Tracks” album.

10th Lady (You bring me) – 1981 – The first single from “In The Pocket” album.

Attacked not without controversy, in 1988, Lionel and Diane Alexander were in a hotel room in Beverly Hills, beloved by Lionel School since 1975 and his wife Brenda Harvey. The marriage in 1993.
