Lionel Brockman Richie Jr. was born in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1949. He was raised on the campus of Tuskegee Institute, where his grandfather worked. He received a scholarship tennis and attended Tuskegee Institute where he earned a degree in economics.
In the mid-1960, Lionel was a member of a number of R & B groups. He joined the Jays in 1968 as a singer and saxophonist. The Jays since the name was too close to the O’Jays, they changed their name to The Commodores. Other original members were the Commodores, William King, Thomas McClary, Milan Williams, Ronald LaPread and Walter “Clyde” Orange.
The Commodores Motown Records, a support act to the Jackson Five, but they soon became a very popular soul groups of their own.
In the early 1980s, Lionel was penning songs for other artists, including Kenny Rogers, Lionel composition “Lady” for the number-one singles in the Billboard took. He was also recording solo in the eighties and has officially left the Commodores in 1983. He was replaced by Skyler Jett as lead singer.
In 1985 he teamed up with Michael Jackson to write and record “We Are The World” together after the U.S. Africa.
On maps, Lionel, hit as a solo artist and with The Commodores, the Top 40 charts and was thirty times the number one seven times. Here are the top 10 hits from Lionel Richie and the Commodores top 10 shots, according to Billboard’s Top 40 weekly charts.

First Endless Love – 1981 – Lionel’s first solo attempt was actually a duet with Diana Ross, from the movie of the same name and went to number one for 9 weeks.
Second All Night Long (All Night) – 1983 – He played this song No. 1 at the Summer Olympics of 1984 in Los Angeles and more recently, the finale of American Idol in 2009.
Third Say You, Say Me – 1985 – More music for films, this time in the movie “White Knights” with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines.
4th Hello – 1984 – The third single from the “can not stop” the album that spawned five Top 10 singles.
5th Really – 1982 – Since his first solo album, the song won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Male Vocalist Performance Lionel.
6th Dancing On The Ceiling – 1986 – The video for this song recalls the 1951 Fred Astaire movie “Royal Wedding” and features guest appearances by comedians Cheech Marin and Rodney Dangerfield.
7th Stuck On You – 1984 – In addition to this single is number three on the pop charts but also reached number 24 on the country charts.
8th You – 1983 – would benefit from his then-wife Brenda Harvey, this single features backing vocals Co-written by Richard Marx.

The Commodores
First Three Times A Lady – 1978 – became her biggest hit was the No. 1 for two weeks and was written by Robert Farthing, the inspiration, when his father made a remark about his mother.
Second Still – 1979 – The Commodores only other number one from their “Midnight Magic” album came.
Third Night Shift – 1985 – The only Top 10 single with no Lionel Richie, the song a tribute to singer Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson. A new version was recorded in 2010, belong to Michael Jackson.
4th Oh No – 1981 – The new single from Lionel Richie to the lines came out of her “In The Pocket” album.
5th Easy – 1977 – This song has been covered by artists such as Clarence Carter, Richie Havens, Taylor Hicks and Faith No More.
6th Sail On – 1979 – The only other Top 10 single of “Midnight Magic” album.
7th Sweet Love – 1976 – Their first single went Top 10 at No. 5 in the charts for the week.
8th Brick House – 1977 – The lyrics were by the members and the wife of trumpeter William King, Shirley wrote and provides the drummer Walter “Clyde” Orange vocals.
9th Just to be close to you – 1976 – For their “Hot On The Tracks” album.
10th Lady (You bring me) – 1981 – The first single from “In The Pocket” album.
Attacked not without controversy, in 1988, Lionel and Diane Alexander were in a hotel room in Beverly Hills, beloved by Lionel School since 1975 and his wife Brenda Harvey. The marriage in 1993. During her marriage she has Nicole Camille Escovedo and changed her name to Nicole Richie. Fashion designer and TV personality Nicole Richie is best known for his role in the reality series, known as “The Simple Life.”
Over the years, Lionel has become an activist for breast cancer and has raised more than three million dollars for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Lionel Richie does not have a Top Forty in 1992, but continued to record and too many of his singles do well on the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts, and there are guided tours. It is to be seen, in 2011, the TV reality show “Who Do You Think You Are?”
The Commodores also continue recording and touring, but never cracked the Top 40 since “Night Shift”. They were included in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2003.
